ActivCard, a leader in strong authentication and electronic certification technology, announced Monday that it has passed “Entrust-Ready” testing for its ActivCard Gold smart card product family.
The tight integration of Entrust/PKI services with the ActivCard Gold smart card client provides an unmatched alliance. This combination of enhanced security, ease-of-use and migration capabilities, is enabling corporations to accelerate the deployment next generation Internet-based business systems and services.
“Today’s Internet-based business environment requires a well planned and well managed infrastructure for identifying and authenticating on-line users, securing access to critical corporate resources, and ensuring data integrity and confidentiality,” said Nigel Johnson, vice president of Partner Marketing for Entrust Technologies Inc. “The addition of ActivCard as an Entrust-Ready partner provides corporations a desired migration path and allows them to take full advantage of the features and benefits of our comprehensive PKI solutions.”
ActivCard Gold, the industry’s most comprehensive multi-function smart card solution, provides users with unprecedented ease-of-use and migration path from current authentication methods to emerging security standards. Through a single ATM-like user interface — insert the card and enter a PIN — ActivCard Gold users have transparent access to existing static passwords, patented one-time-use passwords, and PKI-based digital keys and certificates, which have been generated or stored on the smart card.
“ActivCard Gold’s `Entrust-Ready’ product, demonstrates ActivCard’s commitment to working closely with Entrust Technologies to deliver products offering critical added value features, such as non-repudiation, for Entrust/PKI environments,” said Tom Arthur, president of ActivCard Inc. “The combination of our joint products and technologies offer a solution that uniquely meets the requirements of some of the largest Internet-based e-commerce projects in the world.”
In addition to the ability to support the use of past, present, and future authentication methods, ActivCard Gold provides several key advantages for corporations deploying Entrust Public Key Infrastructures enhanced security, mobility, and non-repudiation.
ActivCard Gold is based on a cryptographic smart card. The signature PKI key pair is generated and processed on the smart card. The private keys remain on the smart card and are never presented to the PC memory or hard disk. ActivCard Gold integrates fully into the Entrust/PKI management system; whenever the key pairs are updated for increased security, the smart card is automatically updated with the new keys.
A user must use two-factor authentication — something he has, the smart card and something he knows, his PIN — to enable use of the private keys or certificates stored on the card.
In today’s anywhere, anytime Internet connected world, access to network-based resources is not limited to your corporate desktop or even a portable workstation. Portability is essential. ActivCard Gold allows users to take all of the digital credentials required for authentication, email decryption, and digital signature with them, on the smart card. This card can then be used, at home, in a remote office, or in a hotel room, anywhere with access to the Internet, to confidently do business on-line.
To support non-repudiation, the keys used for digital signature cannot be backed up and must be under the sole control of the users at all times. ActivCard Gold enables true non-repudiation to be achieved in conjunction with the Entrust/PKI system – private keys are generated on the card, and the card stays with the user at all times.
