President’s Choice Bank is pleased to
announce that CUETS (Credit Union Electronic Transaction Services) and First
Data Resources have been selected as key partners to support the launch of the

IVI Checkmate Corp. announced at the Electronic Transaction Association
Conference,
the U.S. launch of the e(N)-Touch 3000, a dial-based Internet capable
point-of-sale payment terminal for the merchant bankcard industry. The
e(N)-Touch 3000 is a touch-screen transaction terminal capable of handling
secured credit, debit, EBT, smart card transactions as well as value-added
Internet applications such as advertising, loyalty, coupon issuance, e-mail
and merchant home pages. IVI Checkmate released the e(N)-Touch 3000 to the
Canadian merchant bankcard industry last year. The terminal was quickly
adopted by leading financial institutions serving the Canadian marketplace.
The e(N)-Touch 3000 is an open and versatile transaction terminal
featuring a compact, all-in-one design that incorporates a thermal printer and
a large back-lit touch screen, allowing a wide range of applications to be

TYME Execs

Brown Deer, Wis.-based TYME Corporation has announced the promotion of several employees to key executive positions.

John (Jack) Derr, who started with TYME in 1981 and has been vice president since 1984, has been promoted to Executive Vice President. Derr currently lives in West Bend, Wis., but is originally from Frederick, Md.

Merl Hamak is now Vice President of Business Development. He came to TYME in 1990 as director of point-of-sale services. In 1994, he moved up to director of business development. Hamak lives in the Madison suburb of Oregon.

Diane O’Reilly, director of operations since she started with TYME in 1991, is now Vice President of Operations. She lives in Cedarburg, Wis.

Kim Quicker has been promoted to Director of Corporate Accounting and Human Resources. Previously, she was manager of both areas. Quicker, who has been with TYME since 1986, lives in Richfield, Wis.

SWEDEN

Proton World and the Bankernas Kontantkort Cash Association (the consortium of
banks that operate the Proton-based CASH smart card scheme in Sweden, made up
of Nordea, SE Banken, Svenska Handelsbanken and Swedbank ) announced that the
members of the consortium will upgrade their existing Proton host system to
enable it to support smart cards based on the Proton Prisma technology.
The Swedish system is currently the third-largest Proton-based smart card
programme in the world, with 7,330,000 cards issued and 33,176 terminals
installed. The CASH e-purse is typically combined with credit and debit
applications on the same card, but up to now, these applications have used the
magnetic stripe technology. The four issuing banks in the consortium account
for over 85% of the retail banking market in Sweden. They also all have banking
activities and strong links with financial institutions across the Nordic
region.

The first part of the Swedish system to be upgraded will be the jointly-owned
Proton e-purse host and then each bank’s individual EMV (credit/debit) card
issuing system. The new Proton Prisma EMV application is compliant with the
requirements of Europay, MasterCard and Visa for the Swedish market. The first
Proton Prisma cards are scheduled to be issued in a pilot in October 2001 by
Nordea (formerly MeritaNordbanken). The EMV standard for
internationally-accepted credit and debit applications was devised by Europay,
MasterCard and Visa. It specifies the use of smart card technology and obliges
issuers to migrate to EMV-compliant systems by the end of 2005.
Proton Prisma is the new multiple-application smart card technology from Proton
World. The core of Proton Prisma is made up of CALC, a secure applications
management platform which is a spearhead implementation of the forthcoming Open
Platform 2.1 standard, and DFM, a toolkit for the creation of multiple
applications.

The Swedish Proton Prisma cards will contain the full range of Proton Prisma
applications, including ASPIC, a PKI-based authentication application and the
CEPS-based e-purse interface, with overall asymmetric RSA security. These
applications will be activated by the consortium members at a future date of
their deciding.

Tom Anderzén, Manager, Card Issuing at Swedbank and Board Member of the
Bankernas Kontantkort Cash Association, said “The CASH association’s member
banks very much appreciate the fact that, with the new Proton Prisma range,
Proton World can now supply them with a truly multi-application smart card

Reform Battle

The Senate debate over amendments attached to the ‘Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2001′ continues this morning with the strong likelihood of a final vote on Friday. The Senate passed a cloture motion yesterday, which speeds up the debate process, by a vote of 80-19-1. On Wednesday, Secretary of State Colin Powell made clear his opposition to an amendment involving American investors and the insurance giant Lloyd’s of London. Powell indicated the provision, if passed, could have international ramifications. Reportedly there was action last night by two Senators to drop the two paragraphs which limits Lloyds’ ability to collect debts from U.S.”names”. The 420-page bankruptcy reform bill has drawn criticism from other groups including divorce attorneys, business bankruptcy specialists, and consumer groups. Europeans and Americans alike are
heavy users of Instant Messaging applications, according to a new study by
NetValue, a global leader in tracking and interpreting online behavior, but
that is where the similarities end.
“While we are truly living in a ‘global village’ it is important for marketers
to understand the unique socio-demographics of each country, and how they
affect consumer behavior online,” said Jim Hatch, President of NetValue. “This
study indicates the global village will be just as diverse and unique
online as
it is offline.”
Using representative panels of global Internet users, the NetValue
WorldWired(TM) study also found that

— Europeans are heavy users of Instant Messaging, especially in Spain where
Spaniards spend an average of 10.6 days per month on Instant Messaging and
only
9.9 days surfing the Web. Germany, the UK and France spend an average of 10.0
days, 8.1 days and 8.4 days instant messaging respectively. Comparably, in the
US, users spend an average of 8.9 days instant messaging.

— US users spend nearly twice the amount of time (11.5 hours/month) surfing
the web than their European counterparts

– with Germans averaging of 6.8 hours/month, the French an
average of 6.2 hours, and UK surfers an average of 5.8 hours.

— NetValue discovered that men and women tended to have high
affinities(a) to different sectors depending on their country.
For example, women in the US had a high affinity for the
Environmental sector while women in Spain had a high affinity
with eCards. Men in France had the highest affinity to the
Cyber Media sector while men in Germany had the highest
affinity to the Weather sector. Still, there were interesting
commonalities that linked the countries. According to
NetValue, men in both Europe and the U.S. have a high affinity
to the adult sector, which ranked in the top 5 in every
country but the UK, while women on both sides of the Atlantic
have a high affinity to the astrology/horoscope sector.

As part of Germany’s policy to improve mobility and public transport, the
Rhein-Main Verkehrsverbund (RMV), the region’s transport agency (serving 1.2
billion passengers-a-year) is implementing various advanced technology
projects. One of the most important projects is a state-of-the-art electronic
ticketing system for the city of Hanau. Hanau is 20 kilometers east of
Frankfurt and forms the eastern end of the “new corridor,” a vital
transportation route for the Rhein-Main region.

Cubic Transportation Systems is providing the operating “foreground” ticketing
system for Hanau under a subcontract to debis Systemhaus, a subsidiary of
T-Systems, Deutsche Tlekom’s IT services division. Cubic will provide an
integrated, intermodal system for validating tickets and collecting usage
data.
Debis Systemhaus will provide the back office and sales office systems.
This project is the pilot for the large regional RMV project known as Viatec.
The system will also be linked to other regions within Germany and provide the
potential to combine transportation, other third party applications and
e-purse
facilities on the same contact/contactless card.

Municipal transport in Hanau is based on the bus service network operated by
Hanauer Strassenbahn AG (HSB). The surrounding region is linked by other
regional bus services, the majority of which are operated by the
Verkehrsgesellschaft Untermain. Hanau is connected with Frankfurt by the local
Suburban Railway (S-Bahn) and trains operated by Deutsche Bahn (German
Railways).

As a first step, the Electronic Ticketing system will cover the complete route
network of HSB as well as their subcontractors. Regional bus service and
various car parks as additional services are planned to be integrated. On a
mid-term, the system will be extended to the S-Bahn and Deutsche Bahn.
The electronic ticketing system will employ the most modern smart card
technology, utilizing a dual interface micro processor card, allowing
third-party transactions using the “contact” interface and Public Transport
functions using the “contactless” interface. The system is designed for both
prepaid tickets and post-paid tickets, utilizing the passenger’s bank account.
However, for the first phase, the post-paid service will be implemented for
operational use. The card’s security features are compatible with German
national Electronic Purses, such as GeldKarte.

The system utilizes Cubic’s new advanced Check-In/Check-Out Validator, which

supports the time-and-distance-based fare structures of the region. It
reads a
passenger’s contactless smart card upon bus entry and exit. The validator,
which received favorable reviews during its debut at the Hessentag exhibition
in June 2000, is a major component of the electronic ticketing system. Cubic’s
foreground system also includes depot systems with transactions management
software, hand held inspection units and a wireless communication network that
will send data from the buses to the depot computer systems.
The result of the project will provide riders the ability to use one smart
card
for easy access and transfer service between the various bus operators, as
well
as pay fees at the park-and-ride facilities. It will open a nation-wide
standard, as requested by the Verein-Deutscher Verkehrsunternehmen, the
Body of
Public Transport Operators in Germany.
