Tennis Tournament Uses Legic Readers and U-TIC Platform

A major WTA indoor tennis tournament is using an electronic ticketing system. With the U-TIC system, credit-card-sized tickets were checked at the access points to the stadium via a contactless LEGIC based reader system. In the cards, shipped by LEGIC partner Interlock, seating data was saved. After ordering the tickets either online, by telephone or via an order form, the tickets were spot-glued onto an order acknowledgement and mailed to customers. The included information card served as a ticket for public transport on the booked tournament day.
LEGIC Identsystems is a leader in the design and manufacture of 13.56MHz contactless smart card technology. U-TIC is the first modular, Internet and chip card based ticketing and access solution for medium and large events for the whole of Switzerland. The system is used for the first time at the Swisscom Challenge tennis tournament in October 2003. Consortium partners are VisionOne, Kaba, Octagon and Interlock.

Bank One’s 3Q Card Profits Rise But Stay Lower Than Last Year

Bank One reported this morning that its credit card profits for the third quarter were off 4% compared to one-year ago, but up 2% over the prior quarter. The issuer blamed the softer profits on margin compression and a higher provision for credit losses. For the third quarter, Bank One posted net income of $285 million for its Card Services unit, compared to $296 million for 3Q/02 and $279 million in the second quarter. Total card revenue and net interest income increased 5% to $2.1 billion and $1.6 billion, respectively. End-of-period managed card loans increased 7% to $74.2 billion, compared to $69.2 billion one year ago. Charge volume increased 8% to $42.8 billion. Net charge-offs increased to 5.30%, compared to 5.21% in the prior quarter, and 5.00% for 3Q/02. The 30-day delinquency rate, decreased to 3.98% from 4.05% in the prior year but increased from 3.95% in the prior quarter. American Bank Note Holographics to Produce Debit MasterCard Hologram

MasterCard has officially signed an agreement with American Bank Note Holographics to produce the new “Debit MasterCard Hologram.” Under terms of the amended production and supply agreement, ABNH will design and produce the new hologram which will be used on “Debit MasterCard” cards issued in the USA. Under the requirements of the recent Wal-Mart debit card settlement to make its debit cards “clear and conspicuous,” MasterCard announced last month its intentions to introduce a new debit card identifier in 2004. The updated card standards require MasterCard debit issuers in the USA to utilize a new hologram which features the word “Debit” within the MasterCard identification area on MasterCard-branded consumer signature debit, stored-value, electronic benefits transfer, prepaid and payroll cards. Based on the settlement, debit card issuers are required to have 80% of their cards re-issued with a new “Debit” identifier by July 1, 2005, 100% by January 1, 2007. (CF Library 9/11/03)

US Bancorp Says 3Q Debit Settlement Cost Offset by Increased Volume

US Bancorp reported this morning that its credit and debit card revenue and corporate payment products revenue were higher in the third quarter by 6%. However, the issuer noted that the growth was somewhat muted due to the impact of the settlement of the Wal-Mart antitrust litigation, which lowered the interchange rate on signature debit transactions as of August 1st. US Bancorp says the year-over-year impact of the VISA settlement on credit and debit card revenue was approximately $5.7 million. But, the bank said the change in the interchange rate, in addition to higher customer loyalty rewards expenses, were more than offset by increases in transaction volumes and other rate adjustments. ATM processing services and merchant processing services revenue were both slightly lower in the third quarter than one-year ago, by $1.6 million and $1.0 million, respectively. The unfavorable variance in ATM processing services revenue was primarily due to lower transaction volumes, while merchant processing services revenue was lower year-over-year due to lower processing spreads resulting from changes in the mix of merchants.
