Elan Financial Services has purchased the $8.2 million credit card portfolio of MI-based Auto Body Credit Union, with the assistance of NH-based Brookwood Capital. Brookwood Capital offers brokerage, consulting and advisory services to credit card issuers nationwide, specializing in establishing credit card relationships between credit unions and best-in-class issuing partners.

HALIFAX DEBIT CARD

The U.K.’s largest mortgage lender will launch early next year the first debit card that offers a cash-back feature. The new “Halifax Moneyback VISA” card will produce an annual, tax-free rebate of GBP100 for the average U.K. household. Cardholders will receive 1% cashback on debit card purchases up to a total of GBP10,000 a year. The “Moneyback” program will be launched in February and customers will need to credit
the account with at least GBP1,000 a month. The first debit card was launched in the U.K. in 1987. Since then, the number of debit card transactions has risen to over 3.4 billion annually. Debit cards represent 65% of all plastic purchases worth at total of GBP130.5 billion in 2003.

Intuit’s Payroll Card Becomes a MasterCard

Intuit’s “PayCard” debit card is now accepted at all MasterCard merchant locations worldwide. Intuit also announced that its PayCard debit cards can be used to obtain cash, surcharge-free, from more than 11,000 ATMs throughout the USA. The card is offered through an alliance with Genpass, a provider of payroll card services and operator of “MoneyPass,” a national surcharge-free ATM network. “PayCards” are available immediately to Intuit “Payroll Services Complete Payroll” customers. The company plans to also offer it to its “QuickBooks Assisted Payroll” customers in the first half of 2005. The payroll cards is issued by First Bank of St. Louis.

Majority of Canadians use Gift Cards

A new survey has found that seven in ten Canadians considered themselves someone who either receives or gives gift cards. Also, women were more likely than men to consider themselves someone who uses gift cards, and that Canadians between the ages of 18 and 49 were more likely to use gift cards than Canadians over 50 years of age. The findings come from a survey conducted by SES Research on behalf of Givex, which also found that 5% of Canadians said that they spend more or the same value than what is on their gift card, while 7% said they spend less. The reasons for purchasing gift cards: 63% said that when they decide to purchase a gift card for someone it is because it allows the recipient to choose what they want. Twelve percent said it was because it is convenient for them, while another 6% said that they do not like to give cash.
