Joel Lisker, former SVP for Security and Risk Management for MasterCard, has joined the Board of Advisors for Pennsylvania-based Edentify. Lisker was most recently the Senior Vice President for Security and Risk Management for MasterCard International. In this capacity, he served as the company’s worldwide senior security representative for matters relating to the fraudulent use of its numerous card products, and was instrumental in developing technical solutions and strategies to thwart the efforts of organized crime. BNP Paribas Group will deploy 265 Diebold “Opteva” automated teller
machines that are accessible to all of its customers, including those who
are visually impaired. The ATMs will be deployed in the bank’s branches
through the second quarter of 2006. BNP Paribas is the first French
financial institution to launch a large-scale deployment of the Diebold
voice-guidance system with its Opteva terminals. Diebold provides
text-to-speech technology through its partnership with Nuance
Communications, a global provider of speech and imaging solutions.
RealSpeak guides visually impaired users through transactions and
simulates a natural voice that’s easy to understand, enabling quick and
complete transactions such as cash withdrawals, deposits and account
balances with increased ease and fewer errors.
San Francisco-based Pay By Touch is on a roll with its fourth and fifth acquisition of the month. The biometric payment pioneer and leader has picked up two loyalty technology providers. PBT acquired the assets and intellectual property of 7th Street Software and Convena for an undisclosed price. The company says the acquisitions will bolster its brand promise to make shopping more convenient by allowing shoppers access to customized rewards and discounts with the touch of a finger right in the store. 7th Street Software is the developer of “LoyaltySuite.” Last week, Pay By Touch inked a deal to acquire rival VA-based BioPay for $82 million in stock and cash. PBT also last week acquired Capture Resource, a supplier of integrated reward programs and business process outsourcing solutions. Earlier this week, PBT closed its acquisition of Atlanta-based CardSystems Solutions for $47 million in stock and cash. The card generates support for the association each time a new card is activated and repeatedly thereafter each time the card is used. The American Taekwondo Association credit card depicts the colors of the ATA and a taekwondo silhouette. The card features no annual fee, a low introductory rate (APR) and a choice of rewards including cash back or points redeemable for merchandise, travel, gift certificates or virtually any reward with the Choose Your Own Reward option. The executive shake-up at Diebold has taken on a new dimension following a class action lawsuit alleging that the ATM and voting machine maker concealed internal problems from investors and engaged in insider trading. NY-based Stull, Stull & Brody filed the lawsuit covering activities between October 2003 and September 2005. According to the complaint, Diebold lacked a credible state of internal controls and corporate compliance and remained unable to assure the quality and working order of its voting machine products. The complaint also alleges over $2.7 million of insider trading proceeds were obtained by individual defendants during the 2003-2005 period. This week Diebold’s chairman and CEO Wally O’Dell left and was replaced by Thomas Swidarski. The payments-processing subsidiary of China UnionPay has signed a deal to give TSYS a 34% equity interest that may increase to 45% by early next year. The two-year old China UnionPay Data. Co, Ltd. currently provides transaction processing, disaster recovery and other services for banks and bankcard issuers in China, according to this week’s issue of CardFlash International. CUP is sanctioned by the country’s central bank, has 166 members banks and is responsible for operating the only national bankcard network to enable and promote the acceptance of bankcards in China. A new global survey from MasterCard reveals that 60% of small business owners worldwide say the future outlook of their business is promising and over half are confident that they will meet their financial goals in 2006. The “Global Small Business Survey” also shows that 90% of small business owners around the world overwhelmingly believe technology is important to their business’s future. About 80% agree that technology creates financial opportunities for businesses. When asked to forecast for next year, small business owners said payroll expenses (40%) will be their business’s greatest expense, followed by technology upgrades (19%) and capital expenditures (17%).Details
SmartPay and Pudong Development Bank will jointly cooperate to allow
banking customers to register for SmartPay mobile payment services.
SmartPay allows mobile phone users to conveniently pay for
goods and services through their phone. The simplest application for
this service is payment or top-up of phone bills. Users register for
the service, and then will be alerted when their prepaid account is low,
or when their post-paid account is due. The user can then pay via SMS.
SmartPay is the provider of a mobile payments service in China, allowing
consumers to purchase pre-paid credits, pay utility bills, transfer
credit and make purchases. SmartPay is launching additional
direct-to-consumer (D2C) and peer-to-peer (P2P) payment services to its
userbase on a regular basis.
