MasterCard Sues Over the VISA/FIFA Deal

MasterCard has filed a complaint seeking an injunction against the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the governing body of the “FIFA World Cup” to prevent FIFA from moving forward with an agreement with VISA International to sponsor the 2010 and 2014 “FIFA World Cups.” MasterCard’s complaint states that after a period of negotiation in which FIFA assured MasterCard that it was not going to enter into an agreement with a third party, it proceeded in doing so. FIFA did this despite the fact that it had already provided MasterCard with a written contract – including all terms – which MasterCard signed and returned to FIFA, which then advised MasterCard that a deal with VISA was completed. VISA announced earlier this month that it inked a partnership with FIFA.

Oberthur Smart Card Shipments Up 29%

Oberthur Card Systems reported that during the first quarter the company delivered more than 56 million smart cards, a 29.4% increase compared to the year-ago quarter. However, in the payment cards market the number of card delivered declined 18% due to the end of the “chip & PIN” program in the UK. Sales of payment cards amounted to $30.8 million, a 23.4% decrease. Oberthur also notes that the contactless payment card segment continues to develop favorably in the first quarter with deliveries of several million units, driven by large-scale deployments in North America. Sales of magnetic stripe cards, scratch cards and memory cards slipped 5% year-on-year to $25.7 million. Overall, Oberthur posted record first quarter revenue of $152.3 million, topping records set in the first and second quarter of last year. Fortis Bank Orders More Sagem Orga Smart Cards

Fortis Bank has placed a further order for several million EMV Lite Y
smart cards with Sagem Orga. As part of the order, Sagem Orga has
completed the system customization to provide smart card personalization
and customer loyalty features based on “Sagem Orga CPS,” the global card
personalization standard. The smart cards to be supplied by Sagem Orga
will be used in seven different customer segments at Fortis. Each card
product will be given a customized design and profile, with up to four
loyalty applications. Fortis is an international financial services
provider active in the fields of banking and insurance with total assets
of EUR 718 billion.

WAY Systems Expands MTT Terminal Line

MA-based WAY Systems has unveiled three new versions of its “Mobile Transaction Terminal” product line. The Company also announced it has hired some executives from VeriFone and ClearCommerce. The new “MTT 1571” is a dual-band device (850Mhz and 1900Mhz) and is capable of performing credit and online debit transactions with its integrated PCI/PED certified PIN Pad. The new “MTT 1570” operates at 900Mhz and 1800Mhz and can perform credit, debit and EMV transactions through its integrated PIN Pad and smart card reader which conforms to EMV Levels 1 and 2. The new “MTT 1510” now allows for the attachment of an optional enhanced antenna. Meanwhile, WAY Systems has hired Lance Nakamura, who spent 22 years at VeriFone, as its new CTO. George Devitt, formerly VP/Marketing at VeriFone and SVP/CMO at Hypercom, has become the new CMO. Stu Fullerton, formerly with ClearCommerce, has joined the firm as VP/North American Sales.

400MM Smart Bank Cards to Ship in 06

About 2.6 billion smart cards were shipped in 2005 and nearly 3.0
billion are expected to be delivered this year. Smart bank cards grew
20% last year to 336 million and expected to top 400 million this year.
Eurosmart says Telecom is the largest and fastest growing segment with
almost 1.4 billions cards. The major event for the financial segment for
early 2006 was the start in the U.S. of microprocessor card technology
for payment, which was not driven by fraud considerations but by
convenience. Asia should follow this year with the introduction of
contactless payments.

First Data has introduced suite of products designed to personalize card statements. The new “Strategic Communications Solution” includes “Correspondence Director,” “DecisionQuest,” “IntelliColor,” and “eMessenger.” “Correspondence Director” offers advanced correspondence formatting capabilities, for both paper and electronic. “DecisionQuest” provides item-level decisioning enabling issuers to customize communications to each customer by offer, communication device and product. “IntelliColor” offers full color printing combined with on-the-fly MICR printing as well as selective perforation capabilities. “eMessenger” can convert virtually all customer communications to electronic format.

Consumers Hit Overload on Mailings

Chicago-based Mintel Comperemedia reports that consumers received more than 21.5 billion direct mail offers promoting financial services last year, a 20% increase over the prior year. According to the report, consumers are dealing with “information overload” in several ways. This includes limiting their choices to familiar companies or products. Consumers also tend to focus on single aspects of offers, such as the introductory rate or monthly payment, which may oversimplify their decision-making process.

VISA Launches Mobile Payment Pilot

VISA International, in collaboration with Maybank, Maxis Communications
Berhad (Maxis) and Nokia, has launched the world’s first “Mobile VISA
Wave Payment Pilot” in Malaysia. “Mobile VISA Wave Payment” combines Near Field Communications with “VISA Wave Contactless Card” technologies, building on the existing “VISA Wave” contactless card platform. “Mobile VISA Wave Payment” can be made across all merchants in Malaysia that have “VISA Wave”-supported terminals. No change to the current acceptance infrastructure is required. Cardholders selected for the pilot will be issued a phone pre-programmed with their regular Maybankard “VISA Wave” card information. The are currently 2,500 outlets in Malaysia that accept “VISA Wave” and more than 160,000 cards have issued.
