VeriFone’s Secura Powers NYC Subway Trial

VeriFone is providing its “Secura” system with contactless smart card capabilities, together with management software, for the New York City Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s contactless subway trial. The pilot began this summer and involves 80 systems installed at various Metro stations. The pilot is open to any of the 50,000 Citibank contactless customers with a Citi credit and Citibank Debit payment tag, or Citi credit or Citibank Debit MasterCard card with the PayPass logo. Reward Cards to Penetrate 85% of All Cards

A new report has found that by 2009, nearly 85% of consumer credit cards in circulation are expected to offer some sort of reward for its usage. The “U.S. Market for Rewards Cards” study by Informa Research Services also says that 46% of the U.S. population owns at least two credit cards and more than 16% access at least half of their credit. Informa says that issuers offer low introductory credit card rates and no fees to attract customers, but many banks are also offering rewards or rebate incentives.

Online Retailers Face Holiday Challenges

Several retailers reported major outages over “Thanksgiving” and “Black Friday,” including more than 10 hours of downtime from one of the nation’s leading retailers. Visitors to the sites recording such downtime or slowdowns would have received error messages or experienced significant slowdowns, with pages taking up to 8 to 10 times longer to download then normal. Keynote Competitive Research says a spike in demand for the Amazon.com site driven by “flash traffic” to the site shortly after the online retailer announced a promotion for the sale of “XBOX 360.” Keynote also noted that online apparel retailers seemed to be recording more performance issues than other online retailers.

Trintech Pockets $5.3MM on the VeriFone Deal

Dublin-based transaction reconciliation and payment infrastructure specialist Trintech Group reported third quarter revenues of $6.7 million, a 26% increase over its 3Q/05 Funds Management Systems business. Americans Scale Back Yuletide Cheer in 06

A new survey of more than 2,800 Americans reveals that consumers plan to spend at least 10% less on gifts this year as compared to last year and one in six plans to spend at least 20% less. The research also showed that the average American racks up $2,000 of credit card debt during the holidays and then takes 10 months to pay it off. The poll by GMAC Mortgage also showed that 77% plan to spend less than $1,000 on holiday gifts and nearly half (47%) plan to spend less than $500 or less. GMAC noted that 67% of respondents admit to having done something financially “out of control.”
