American Express and John Lewis retailers have signed a card acceptance
agreement allowing cardholders to make purchases at all of the retailer’s
locations, on the website and through the John Lewis mail order catalog.
The agreement is the result of research suggesting that the customer
profile
of both businesses are synonymous and that the retail products that John
Lewis offers appeals to the majority of American Express customers. Also,
with this agreement, the two entities plan to develop customer loyalty and
discount programs driving revenue for either side.

New AmEx Spot to Feature Beyonce Knowles

American Express announced that actress, singer and fashion designer Beyoncé Knowles will join the company’s “Are you a Cardmember?” campaign. Knowles’ national campaign currently features a print advertisement shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. The television spot grants viewers a behind the scenes pass to follow Knowles’ hectic life on tour, a whirlwind schedule taking her from photo shoot to dance rehearsal to press conference all in a day’s work. The fast-paced spot captures her real life struggle to balance between her career and her family. Launched in April this year, the “Are you a Cardmember?” campaign features extraordinary Cardmembers, telling their stories, while illustrating the benefits and services of being an American Express Cardmember. The campaign to date has featured tennis great John McEnroe, professional snowboarder and skateboarder Shaun White, comedian and television personality Tina Fey and comedian Larry David.

Chongquing Mobile has selected the
INSIDE Contactless “MicroRead” NFC platform for its contactless
mobile payment deployment. Using the People’s Bank of China standard
payment application, information is stored on the phone’s SIM card and
was chosen for deployment because of its features that allow Chinese
operators to deploy applications rapidly. Chongquing also decided to
deploy this NFC solution due its ability to establish secure connections
over a diverse number of applications including ticketing, payments, retail
transactions and various others. Furthermore, the “MicroRead”
“battery off” mode enables NFC and SIM power generated from the
antenna RF field to conduct transactions regardless of phone power supply.
INSIDE Contactless currently has 56 patents in the NFC industry with
over 20 million chip platforms and nearly 12 leading bank card issuers.
Chongqing Mobile works with 285 companies in 216 countries and
territories, has 126 operators in 135 countries and territories and has over
10 million subscribers.

Teres Solutions Tops 130 SAIL Clients

Teres Solutions has signed eight new customer deals for its “SAIL” lending software with 1st Liberty Federal Credit Union, EECU, Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, PrimeWay Federal Credit Union, Red Canoe Credit Union, Red River Employees Federal Credit Union, Shell Federal Credit Union and TDECU. The SAIL family of indirect and direct lending software products significantly reduces the time it takes to review loan applications, request and review credit reports, enter data into core systems, make lending decisions and quickly respond to dealers and members. Together, the lending programs of these new Teres Solutions customers are expected to generate billions of dollars in new loan volume this year bringing the total projected loan volume Teres Solutions to more than $47 billion in 2007.Teres Solutions is a provider of direct and indirect lending software products.

SYMANTEC STATISTICS

Symantec has released statistics reflecting the increasing
professionalism of
cyber-criminals and in phishing with the use of professional
methods, tools and strategies. For the 1H07, Symantec found that of these
tools, “MPack” was among the most popular. “MPack” is a professionally
developed toolkit sold in the underground economy that installs malicious
code on computers and monitors the success of the attack through its
online,
password protected control and management console. During the same
period, findings show that 61% of all vulnerabilities were first
encountered
through trusted, popular websites and 28 of the top 50 malicious code
samples
were staged as a download. Additionally, Symantec found an increase of 163
vulnerabilities in Web browser plug-ins since 2H06, 46% of all data
breaches
resulted in theft or loss of computer data-storage and 58% of enterprises
expect a major data loss at least once every 5 years. These statistics
are from
the semiannual “Symantec Internet Security Threat Report (ISTR), Volume XII”
and are a culmination of findings from January 1, 2007, through June 30,
2007.
The findings are conducted with 40,000 sensors in over 180 countries and are
based on reviews of more than 2 million decoy email accounts and the volume
of SPAM they attracted.

USA Technologies has appointed Bruce Shirey, formerly of First Data Corp, Cardservice International and Way Systems, as Vice President of e-Port Connect Services. Also Len Crosson, formerly of Sprint Nextel, was appointed Vice President of Global Sales and Business Development. Shirey assumes responsibility for USA Technologies’ e-Port Connect Service which was launched earlier this year as the first complete portfolio of high-speed turnkey services for the multi-billion dollar unattended point-of-sale industry. Crosson assumes responsibility for USA Technologies’ global sales objectives via direct sales, strategic partnerships, and distribution agreements. Experian and Mirae Credit Information Services Corporation(MCI)
have jointly established “Experian Decision Analytics Korea”
(EDAK) as an aid to institutions and firms. “EDAK” will provide
these establishments with consultancy, tools, systems and services to
make financially sound business decisions. Combining Experian’s
enterprise-wide solutions and MCI local knowledge,
these tools will assist on matters involving credit risk, fraud prevention
and account management. The introduction of this tool is in response
to Korea’s booming economic growth and the subsequent need for

services in the financial services sector. Other market segments to
utilize “EDAK” will include telecommunications service providers,

MasterCard PayPass Continues Leadership Role

MasterCard’s “PayPass” continues to exert leadership and momentum in the global contactless payment arena. Over the past twelve months the number of “PayPass” cards and devices has soared by 60%, rising to 16 million at mid-year. This month in the U.S., Harvard University Employees CU became the first credit union to offer “PayPass”; PETCO Animal Supplies announced it will accept “PayPass” in all of its 900 stores; MO-based Central Bancompany became the first community bank holding company to issue “PayPass” cards; and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Einstein Brother’s Bagels and Noah’s Bagels, announced that they will begin accepting contactless payments at their over 400 locations. Last month, MasterCard and VeriFone announced that New York City taxis will begin accepting “PayPass,” with more than 5,000 NYC taxis anticipated to accept PayPass by December and MasterCard and USA Technologies announced the installation of a record number of cashless payment terminals, up to 7,500 into Coca-Cola vending machines in several markets nationwide. Internationally, “PayPass” trials and roll-outs are currently underway in 18 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.K.

Clear2Pay has signed its first payment contract with Tai Yuan City
Bank. With this development, Tai Yuan City will be implementing
Clear2Pay’s check image exchange system for clearing of low value
vouchers, using CNAPS architecture, allowing the bank to circulate
checks with secure, efficient payment settlement. Clear2Pay China’s
office employs 40, including a sales team, with a total of 260 around

Alaska Airlines has deployed GuestLogix’ “Mobile Virtual Store”
in-flight retail platform on 22 transcontinental flights. This
development is in response to positive reception from Alaska Airline
customers and their option to use credit and debit card purchases
for beer, wine, “Red Bull” energy drinks, “Northern Bites” meals,
picnic packs, and the rental of “digEplayer” personal entertainment
systems. The “Mobile Virtual Store” is available on a total of nearly
300 million passenger trips a year and fast becoming recognized as
an industry standard. Alaska Airlines serves 92 cities throughout
North America and is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary while
GuestLogix provides on-board retail transaction-based solutions for
airlines, caterers, railways, ferries, hotels and commissary customers.

VISA payWave Gains Traction in US & Abroad

VISA’s contactless technology continues to gain traction in the U.S. and internationally with 41 issuers in 11 countries, including seven of the top ten VISA issuers in the USA. “VISA payWave” has been applied to credit, debit, prepaid cards and is now being tested with mobile phones. Wells Fargo is currently testing “VISA payWave” on the mobile platform, using contactless and NFC for payment and mobile couponing technologies. SC-based First Citizen Bank and Barclays started to issue “VISA payWave” cards in August bringing the total number of “VISA payWave” issuers in the U.S. to thirteen. National merchants already accepting “VISA payWave” in the U.S. include BP, 7 Eleven, CVS Pharmacy, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box. National merchants in the process of upgrading POS terminals to “payWave” include Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Circle K, Office Depot, and PETCO. In Europe, HSBC Bank, HBOS, Lloyds TSB, RBS and Barclays have been acquiring “VISA payWave” merchants in London and began issuing the new cards this month. This week VISA announced the launch of a landmark mobile payment trial with Chunghwa Telecom and Chinatrust Commercial Bank in Taiwan.

PAYWAVE MOBILE

VISA’s mobile payment platform is getting a big lift as it gears up a major pilot in Asia Pacific. The six-month trial will combine near field communication-enabled mobile phones, over-the-air personalization, “Visa payWave” contactless payments and merchant direct marketing offers sent to the phone. The “PayWave” pilot is a collaboration with Chunghwa Telecom, Chinatrust Commercial Bank and Nokia. Taiwan is the top “Visa payWave” contactless market in the Asia Pacific with more than 1.4 million VISA contactless cards in use. VISA noted that recent research shows mobile phone penetration rate is 103.2% Taiwan. The public pilot will involve 500 Chunghwa Telecom “Call Call” co-brand cardholders using NFC-enabled “Nokia 6131i” handsets to make contactless payments at any of the 3,000 stores that accept “Visa payWave” contactless cards in Taiwan. Consumers will be able to obtain merchant offers by pre-registering their preferences to receive certain types of coupons or by holding their phone up to special posters located in popular shopping areas, thereby triggering on-demand download of specific merchant offers. On-demand offers are supported through the use of posters and other media embedded with NFC tags.
