Small Business Economic Confidence Sinks

Economic confidence among small business owners declined again in September for the second consecutive month, falling to its lowest point in a year. The downshift was largely driven by cash flow issues with 46% of small business owners saying that they experienced cash flow issues in the last 90 days. The “Discover Small Business Watch” index dipped to 99.2, down more than three points from August’s 102.4. However, Discover found that ownersâ™ expectations of economic conditions for their businesses will improve over the next six months are higher, and they are planning to increase hiring and spend more on business development. About 40% of small business owners feel that economic conditions for their businesses are getting better, an increase over the 36% who said the same in August. The percentage of business owners who say they will spend more on business development in the next six months rose from 34% in August to 36% in September. Nearly one third of small business owners said that they extend credit to their customers, and of those, 64% said that their customers who use credit had delayed a payment or asked to delay a payment in the past three months.

CardTrak.com Celebrates 12 Years on the Web

CardTrak.com, the nation’s first credit card information service for consumers and the first Website devoted to helping Americans comparison shop for payment cards is celebrating its 21st anniversary and its 12th year on the Internet. Launched in October 1986, the firm created the first national database of credit card programs, assembling the information in seven regional annual “Bankcard Directories” for $10 each, empowering consumers for the first time to comparison shop. In 1988 the Company began publishing an abbreviated national monthly version called “Bankcard List,” for 50 cents per copy, as it began producing the monthly list of the best credit card offers for “The Wall Street Journal” and other national publications. In early 1991, as the range of credit card products exploded, the firm created the “CardTrak” monthly newsletter for $5 per copy that provided lists of the best credit card products in several categories, coupled with the latest news and commentary. Launching its Web site in September 1995 at the American Bankers Association annual credit card industry convention, the firm greatly expanded its consumer services and phased-out charging consumers for its information, switching to an advertising paradigm. Today CardTrak.com offers robust search engines to locate the best credit card offers and current credit card perks plus daily news, polls, sweepstakes, FAQs, tips, calculator and statistics.
