APRIL INDICATORS

The Conference Board of Mexico has released business cycle indicators
for April 2008 with the leading index having increased 2.3% and the
coincident index having increased 0.3% for the month. Additional
findings show the leading index fell 2.8% between October 2007 to April
2008, consistent with the 2.8% in June of 2007, and the coincident index
rose .7% between October 2007 and April 2008. Meanwhile, the Real GDP
grew at about a 2.1% throughout 1Q/08, down from a 4.2% average annual
rate in 3Q/07 and 4Q/07. Founded in 1916, The Conference Board is a

EQUENS SEPA PROCESSING

In response to high volumes of cross-border payments seen in the
Scandinavian market, Equens payment processor will be processing
cross-border payment transactions for the OP-Pohjola Group finance group

PRIVACY ABUSE

According to StrongMail’s recent survey of 900 UK data protection and
marketing professionals, UK businesses are prepared to disclose the
personal data of their customers in the name of increasing sales
volumes. Among these organizations, the StrongMail survey finds 7% will
disclose customers’ sexual orientation, 10% will disclose customers’
religious beliefs, 14% will disclose customers’ political affiliation,
5% will disclose customers’ ethnic background and 19% will give out
customer credit card details. StrongMail Systems provide
commercial-grade, on-premise solutions for marketing and transactional
email to hundreds of companies worldwide.

Charge-Offs Still Head North in April

Charge-offs on managed U.S. credit card loans hit 5.82% in April, the highest level in three years. However, sequentially charge-offs rose 77 basis points since December and 21 basis points since March. According to CardData ([www.carddata.com][1]) charge-offs peaked at 7.57% in April of 2002, following the 2001 recession. Last week, Capital One reported that U.S. Card charge-offs for May rose to 6.28% from 6.08% in April.

PAY IN YOUR CURRENCY

Planet Payment multi-currency payment processor will be providing DBS
Bank Limited (Hong Kong) with its “Pay in Your Currency” and
Multi-Currency Pricing services, effective July 2008. This will allow
DBS clients with a real-time choice of currencies in which to complete
their Visa or MasterCard purchases, providing tourists and business
travelers with the comfort of knowing how much they are paying in their

Comdata Names a New Merchant Solutions SVP/GM

Payment solution provider Comdata has named Joseph Daly, previously with Ceridian, to the role of SVP and GM of merchant solutions. Daly was director of internal audit for Ceridian Corporation, Comdata’s parent company, where he was responsible for the execution of a risk-based operational, financial and information technology annual internal audit plan. Before joining Ceridian, Daly was the compliance director for CIGNA Government Services and was a vice president with Deutsche Bank N.A. Daly began his career with Dreyfus Corporation as a senior auditor in 1988. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Binghamton University and is completing his Masters of Business Administration from Trevecca Nazarene University this year.

Big Banks Understand E-Marketing Importance

Based on a survey of 23 of the top 80 U.S. financial institutions conducted by Aite Group in the first quarter, the largest banks understand the importance of developing and investing in an online marketing competency better than smaller banks. Top 25 banks place a higher priority on selling financial products online, allocate more of their ad dollars to the online channel, and implement a wider range of online marketing tactics compared to other banks. As a result, Top 25 banks are far more likely to have seen increases in account balances, retention and number of products owned among their online banking and online bill pay customers. Online conversion rates for deposit products are heading down over a spectrum of banks, however, because financial institutions are failing to close sales online due to ineffective online marketing capabilities.

Firethorn Powers Boeing Employees’ CU M-Wallet

Mobile commerce provider Firethorn Holdings has added BECU to its customer base and will launch a mobile wallet application. BECU plans on launching the Firethorn mobile wallet application in the first quarter of 2009. By collaborating with Firethorn, BECU will enable its members to check their account balances, transfer funds and view and pay bills through their mobile devices. Future service capabilities will include more advanced mobile transactions and mobile commerce. BECU is the largest credit union in Washington state and is one of the top five financial cooperatives in the country with more than 550,000 members and more than $8.3 billion in assets.

Desjardins Expands Chip Cards In Quebec

Quebec’s Desjardins Group has launched its chip card, providing members of Desjardins caisses better protection against fraud for debit and credit card transactions. With close to 20,000 Desjardins chip cards already in circulation, more than 9 million Desjardins debit and credit cards will eventually be equipped with microchips over the next few years. Additionally, Desjardins Group’s equipment is to soon be adjusted for acceptance of the chip cards, including 2,700 ATMs, over 1,425 branches upgraded computers and more than 55,000 businesses’ point-of-sale terminals. The card will also maintain magnetic strip technology for card acceptance where chip-and-PIN is not yet accepted.

Citi/SK Telecom M-Services Android Compatible

Citi and SK Telecom’s joint venture Mobile Money Ventures has announced that its solution for mobile financial services is compatible with “Android”, a software stack for mobile devices. End users will be able to easily download the financial application that will enable them to transfer money, check their accounts, get branch information, and carry out a Person-to-Person (P2P) transfer and will also have access to a stock monitoring feature that allows for real-time trading, portfolio management, and real-time market information. Other features include tracking receipts and expenses and a variety of payment functions. Google and other players have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders. Mobile Money Ventures LLC (MMV) is the global solution provider of the next generation of mobile financial services applications.

MasterCard’s GTO Names a New CTO

MasterCard has promoted Michael Manchisi to CTO. He succeeds Rob Reeg, who recently was appointed president of MasterCard Global Technology & Operations after serving as interim president since January. Reeg succeeded Roy Dunbar, who concluded his employment with MasterCard in January. Manchisi most recently was group executive, MasterCard Strategic Account Management, overseeing GTO partnerships with MasterCard customers and internal business partners. He has held senior leadership positions in MasterCard corporate and regional finance, customer service, and computer and network services. MasterCard GTO manages its operations in 210 countries and territories, including major processing centers in Brussels, Sydney and Chennai. For 25,000 financial institutions, the MasterCard network in 2007 processed 18.7 billion transactions.
