AmEx International Card Profits Drop 52%

American Express reports that net income for its International Card
Services business plummeted 52% for the third quarter of this year
compared to the same quarter in 2007. The decline was primarily
attributed to revenues net of interest expense increasing 11% due to
spending and loan growth. Total expenses rose by 13% reflecting higher
volumes and business-building investments and provisions for losses
increased 60%, primarily driven by higher lending reserve levels in
Mexico. Marketing, promotion, rewards and cardholders services expenses
increased 10% reflecting greater marketing and promotion expenses and
higher volume related rewards costs. Both revenue and expense growth
rates were also inflated by the translation of foreign currency.
American Express had 16.4 million cards-in-force at the end of the
quarter, up 4% from 3Q/07. Card billed business for the quarter
increased 11% to $27.5 billion. For complete details on AmEx’s

Western Union Q3 Net Income Rises 11%

Western Union reported that revenue for the third quarter rose 10% to
$1.38 billion as net income increased 11% to $241 million.
Consumer-to-consumer revenue gained 12% on 13% transaction growth while
consumer-to-business revenue slipped 2% on 2% transaction growth.
The C2C segment, representing 85% of WU revenue, experienced slower
growth in China and certain European countries. But, strong growth in
C2C was posted in the Middle East, India and the Philippines. The
domestic C2C business revenue was down 3%. However WU noted that this is
the lowest rate of decline in the last nine quarters. The Americas
region, which represents 33% of total revenue, reported revenue flat
compared to last year’s third quarter and 1% transaction growth. Results
in this region continue to be impacted by the challenging U.S. economy.
The Company recently launched a new campaign in the U.S., “Cash, the
perfect gift.” WU also noted that the environment has been challenging
for its C2B business, impacted by the Company’s declining U.S. bill
payment business. WU is handling significantly fewer bill payments than
originally anticipated at the beginning of 2008 as many more American
consumers who would use this service are currently unable to pay their
bills and unable to obtain new credit. For complete details on Western
