Incentive provider Zave Networks has partnered with Scanbuy mobile barcode
solutions to offers consumers access to discounts and coupons. Aligning Scanbuy’s
“ScanLife” mobile barcode capture using 2D barcode with Zavers’ incentive “Zave
Network”, digitally linking manufacturers’ coupons to consumers and retailers, the
partnership allows consumers to easily find and save coupons in their Zavers
account for redemption at participating retailers. The user simply snaps a picture of
a ScanLife 2D Barcode with their cellphone from the advertisement, which is then
detected on the ScanLife application in the phone and directed to the Zavers mobile
site for the online coupon. The coupon is then scanned and redeemed when the

Fleet card specialist PHH corporation changed CEOs this week after pressure from its largest investor. Pennant Capital Management also succeeded in adding two of its two candidates on the PHH Board this week. George Kilroy, a 33 year veteran of the Company, has been named Acting CEO and President of PHH Corporation, and James Egan, who joined to Board in April, has been elected as Chairman of the Board. Both appointments were effective June 17th. Kilroy served as President and CEO of PHH Arval, the Company’s fleet management services business, since March 2001. Egan was previously a Managing Director of Investcorp International. PHH is an outsource provider of mortgage and vehicle fleet management services. TSYS and Toyota Finance have extended agreements to include prepaid
payment and processing services for the Toyota “Tressa Style Card Plus”.
“Tressa Style Card Plus” e-money reward card facilitates prepaid and
QUICPay contactless card payment transactions. TSYS offers payment
processing for the ‘Tressa’ card and other payment cards with debit,
credit, retail gift, loyalty and prepaid capabilities through its TSYS
Japan division. Toyota Finance provides credit cards for 7.2 million
cardholders with total transaction volumes exceeding $18 billion while
QUICPay contactless chip-based e-money schemes allows consumers to
register their cards to allow contactless point-of-sale terminal
Identity protection provider LifeLock has partnered with Arizona State Universityâs to offer the ASU “SunCard”
with LifeLockâs identity theft protection services at a discounted rate.
“SunCard” is the official ID for ASU and is used by faculty, staff and
students. The card enables students to receive discounts at a variety of
vendors who have partnerships with ASU through “SunCard”. The card also
works as a declining balance debit card and parents are able to easily
add funds to a studentâs account. The “SunCard” program positions ASU in
the forefront among universities, moving away from using Social Security
numbers as student identification.
The European Patent Office (EPO) has ruled in favor of Global Refund and
its Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) business against Mainline’s
competing DCC patent. The Mainline patent application for DCC was
originally filed and granted in 2001 by the EPO. The Mainline DCC data
processing procedure, however, was reviewed and consequently revoked
based on research showing preferred currency for payment card
transactions between merchants and cardholders. The EPO decision
confirms the validity Global Refund’s arguments and has eliminated any
risk from Mainline for legal disputes based on the revoked patent.

A San Francisco-based startup has launched a new global mobile payments service for online purchases that could potentially reach 1.6 billion customers via 170 mobile operators. The firm has picked up funding, acquired two established companies and formed a top management team. San Francisco-based BOKU has raised $13 million in venture capital investment led by Benchmark Capital, with participation from Index Ventures and Khosla Ventures. The Company also acquired Paymo, based in San Francisco and the Mobillcash business, originally founded in the UK. The Federal Trade Commission’s claims administrator mailed more than 400,000
checks on June 12, 2009 to consumers identified as victims of
an illegal credit card billing scam operated by J.K. Publications and
other defendants.T he redress checks are the result of a lawsuit the FTC filed in 1999. The defendants made unauthorized charges on consumersâ
credit and debit cards for purported Internet services. The defendantsâ records obtained during litigation contained only credit
and debit card numbers. Under instructions from the court, Credit
Reporting Agencies and banks provided the FTC with the names and
addresses associated with the card numbers as of the date of the

The first prepaid debit card on the Romanian market issued by a banking institution has been introduced. The new “Raiffeisen Bank Visa” prepaid card is also the only prepaid card that enables Romanians to send money domestically from their mobile phones. Customers who buy and load cash on the card can shop online, make purchases anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, withdraw cash from ATMs worldwide and use the integrated YAP mobile service to send money domestically to friends and family or check balances from their mobile phones with a simple text

While the nation’s top issuers posted double digit declines in credit card volume and about a 5% decline in outstandings for the first quarter compared to 1Q/08, credit unions have weathered the storm well. Based on Q1 results from credit union card portfolios with $150 million to $200 million in outstandings, credit card volume declined 2% as credit card outstandings were flat during the same period. According to CardData (www.carddata.com), credit card outstandings among this peer group only declined 4% from the fourth quarter, in line with historical seasonal patterns. According to OR-based AssetExchange, overall credit card balances among credit union issuers increased 5.9% during the first quarter, compared to a growth rate of 16% for 1Q/08. The percentage of portfolios that grew more than the rate of inflation during the previous 12 months decreased to 66% in 1Q/09 from 75% in the year ago quarter.
