AmEx Issues $10mm Commitment to History

American Express has signed a $10 million, five-year commitment to historic preservation and launched the American Express “Partners in Preservation” program. This expands company focus on securing cultural assets for the future and builds on its decade-long relationship with the World Monuments Fund (WMF) through partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Planet Payment Sees 3Q/10 Revenue up 32% Y/Y

Planet Payment payment and data processor announced 3Q/10 total revenue was up 32% to $15.5m from the year ago figure of $11.7m with multi-currency revenue up 47% to $12.5m from the year ago figure of $8.5m. Gross profit for the period was up 22% to $5.0m from $4.1m in 3Q/09 while adjusted EBITDA for the quarter increased to $0.4m from $0.2m in Q3‘09. On a GAAP basis, net loss narrowed by 44% to ($0.4m) compared to the Q3‘09 loss: ($0.8m), and also narrowed by 47% sequentially over the prior quarter (Q2’10 loss ($0.7m). Planet Payment’s revenue growth reflects an increase in transaction processing volumes thanks to its 46 banking and processing customers having continued to roll out Planet Payment’s solutions in sixteen countries as reflected by the addition of 3,800 active merchant locations for a 39% increase from the year ago period. This is also a reflection of the Company having expanded debit card processing with the certification of Maestro for the Middle East and Africa; complementing Planet Payment’s support of VISA Debit and Interac in Canada; and adding EMV support for online PIN entry for the Middle East and Africa.

MultiAccount™: The device includes two buttons on the face of a card. Next to each button is a printed account number and a light source. A user can select an account by pressing one of the buttons. The card visually indicates the selection by turning ON the light source associated with the selected account. Additionally, the magnetic-stripe information associated with the selected account is written to the Electronic Stripe™.

Hidden™: The device includes five buttons on the face of a card and a paper-thin flexible display. The display hides a portion of a cardholder’s payment card number. To turn the device ON, a user must enter a personal unlocking code into the card. A user can choose whether to use points or use credit at the point of sale by pressing the appropriate button. The card will then visually indicate the selection by turning ON the light source associated with the selected option. The magnetic-stripe information associated with the payment option is then written to the Electronic Stripe™. The card can then be swiped at any magnetic stripe reader.

Dynamic Credit Card™: A unique security code is written to the Electronic Stripe™ every time the card is activated. A display may be added to the card such that a unique security code is also displayed every time the card is used. These displayed and in-stripe security codes eradicate fraud associated with stolen, or “skimmed,” intangible card numbers.

Hiller’s Markets has successfully launched the first digital coupon platform that does not rely on any additional in-store infrastructure or hardware within the store headquarters. The new POS Digital Coupon technology is powered by M-Dot Network, a digital incentive processing company providing retailers with an enterprise platform for managing the issuance, precision marketing and real-time redemption of digital coupons and offers.
Hiller’s Markets new program, marketed as Click And Save at Hiller’s (C.A.S.H.), enables shoppers to receive digital coupons via the retailer’s web site or their mobile phone. Coupons are made available from Hiller’s and multiple third party coupon issuers, including AOL ShortCuts.com, Valassis’ RedPlum.com, News America’s SmartSource.com, CellFire and OnIX. Shoppers register for service online or on their mobile phone. Just about any mobile phone with data service can be used.

Americans Holiday Shopping to Average $710

This holiday, Americans will spend an average of $710, $1,384 for those who earn $100,000 annually. Women will particularly power the holiday shopping season with 100% of those surveyed planning to hit the stores while 12% of men have no holiday shopping plans. Both male and female consumers’ intentions to “give back” continues to make a comeback from 63% in the year ago period to 67%. With 51% planning to finish holiday shopping one week before Christmas, 5% will shop on Christmas Eve; 53% plan to give gift cards; 50% will gift clothing; 43% will gift toys; and 20% will spend the most on electronics and gadgets with an average ticket price of $316. This, according to the latest American Express “Spending & Saving Tracker,” also indicates 80% of those earning more than $100,000 annually plan to make a charitable contribution; 41% will donate money to an organization, compared to 36% in 2009; 31% will purchase gift or grocery items for the needy, for no change from the year prior; and 22% will volunteer, compared to 18% in 2009.

CREDIT CARD USE

Recent research indicates 70% of consumers intend to spend less on credit cards this year, only 11% of which anticipate they will be tempted to do so. However, with 55% putting just about all of their Xmas expenditure on a credit card, 52% disclosed they paid off their credit card bills in full each month. With this, 91% felt that interest rates on credit cards were a rip off and 59% agreed with the statement ‘If I had any sense, I’d cut up my credit cards’. This research is accordingly an indication consumers are getting more financially sensible in the recession, albeit waning.

Cardtronics Announces Changes to Board of Directors

Cardtronics announced the resignation of Fred R. Lummis as chairman of
the Board, effective November 10, 2010, where he served nine years to
grow the Company to more than 33,000 ATMs in three countries.
Subsequently, Dennis F. Lynch has been appointed as the Board’s new
chairman and will continue to serve as a member of the Board’s Audit
Committee and Chairman of the Company’s Compensation Committee. With
this, Mark Rossi will serve as a new independent director to serve on
the Company’s Board, effective December 1, 2010, and has been appointed
to serve as a member of the Board’s Compensation Committee. Rossi holds
a Masters of Business Administration from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate
