Microchip Launches Low-Cost 8-bit PIC Microcontroller

Microchip Technology microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions has expanded its 8-bit segmented LCD microcontroller (MCU) family with five new devices”the PIC16LF1902/3/4/6/7 (PIC16LF190X) MCUs. The PIC16LF190X family supports many general-purpose applications and enables the implementation of LCD into low-power and cost-sensitive designs, such as security tokens, smart cards, medical devices, home appliances, key fobs or any application involving a segmented LCD. Featuring eXtreme Low Power (XLP) technology for sleep currents down to 20 nA, and a typical active current of 35 microamperes per MHz, the MCUs extend battery life, while maintaining accurate timing with a RTC and driving a segmented LCD. With the addition of XLP technology for extended battery life, and capabilities such as utilizing the integrated temperature indicator to provide crystal-accuracy compensation, low-power RTC support and low voltage-detect support utilizing the internal ADC and voltage reference, the MCUs enable low-cost LCD solutions for a multitude of portable devices.

VFW & USAA Launch Investment Credit Card

USAA and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) have partnered to offer their credit card with USAA’s investment solutions to more than 1.6 million VFW members.
The new co-branded credit card allows VFW members to apply for the Veterans of Foreign Wars USAA Rewards World MasterCard, which will help support the organization’s activities and programs. Additionally, USAA is now the VFW’s preferred provider of investment solutions for its membership. According to Nathan McKinley, USAA vice president of military affinity, the relationship expands USAA’s efforts to serve those who served the nation during times of war, along with organizations committed to advancing veteran benefits and care.

CLASS ACTION Accuses VISA, MASTERCARD AND BANKS of Price Fixing

Branch MacMaster and Camp Fiorante Matthews have filed a proposed national class action in the British Columbia Supreme Court against Visa, MasterCard, and several leading banks, alleging the credit card giants and banks have engaged in multi-billion dollar price fixing conspiracies. The conspiracies were allegedly to increase or maintain the fees paid by merchants on every credit card transaction. The filer claims, for example, when a customer pays with a credit card, Visa and MasterCard take a percentage fee, along with the card-issuing bank and the company that processes the payment. That percentage allegedly varied depending on what kind of card is used, while basic cards charge a smaller percentage and premium credit cards that offer points and other rewards cost merchants a much higher fee.

Gemalto mNFC Payment App Certified by MasterCard

Gemalto digital security has released its UICC-embedded software application compliant with Mobile MasterCard “PayPass M/Chip 4” MasterCard payment specification designed for m-NFC. The software application and the UICC have both successfully achieved the compliance assessment and security testing certification in accordance with MasterCard’s highest chip security requirements. This paves the way for mass commercial rollouts of NFC payment across the world. In the UK, Gemalto is already partnering with a global, first-tier financial institution and a world leading mobile operator, to implement the new MasterCard certified mobile payment application and carry out the solution’s first mass commercial roll out.

Oberthur Technologies Posts Revenue Up 8.2% Y/Y

Oberthur Technologies secure technologies posted full year 2010 results, with revenue up 8.2% from the year ago figure to EUR978.8M. The EBIT margin accounts for 10.4% in 2010 compared with 9.6% in 2009 and the net result margin is at 6.1% in 2010 compared with 5.4% in 2009. Oberthur Technologies Security Printing division recorded a remarkable increase of 50% of its banknotes activity. In 2010, the overall revenue of this division progressed by more than one third in comparison with 2009. The Identity division also recorded a significant progression notably with the development of its systems offer. Meanwhile, Card Systems revenue was also up in 2010 compared to 2009, with a return to growth in the second half of the year.

New mApps for O2 by 3V Provide Functionality to Customers

In partnership with 3V Transaction Services Irish Payments Company, O2 Money applications are now available on both the Apple and Android platforms. With this, O2 Money customers can now transfer funds between O2 Money cards in real time irrespective of where either sender or recipient is located. The money transfer system costs EUR1 for any amount transferred up to EUR350, recipients can spend the money on the card in-store or online or to withdraw funds at an ATM. App users also benefit from a dashboard feature providing balance checks and transaction history. Additional functionality includes a Google map feature which provides O2 Money customers with the nearest top-up store location and directions on how to get there. Since its launch, over 15,000 people have signed up to O2 Money. Of these 77% of customers are in the 18-44 age bracket, with 60% of cards purchased by men since launch, while 76% of transactions have been online, with retailers, auction sites and airline sites proving most popular.
