China Merchants Bank and Renren to Pioneer Social Credit Card

China Merchants Bank commercial bank and Renren real name social networking internet platform forged a joint venture to issue a co-branded “Renren CMB” credit card with social features. This credit card program will be a globally innovative pilot that pioneers the combination of social, location and mobile services. CMB will offer information about, and services provided by over 10,000 of their merchant partners through Renren’s Location Based Services. When the co-branded credit card holders “check in” from their current locations through Renren’s Location Based Services function, they will receive promotional information from CMB merchant partners located in the vicinity. In addition, a wide range of loyalty incentive programs will also be offered by both Renren and CMB for the co-branded credit card applicants and holders.

Fis to process Post Office travel card

Fis banking and payments technology has signed a contract to manage the UK Post Office’s “Travel Money Card Plus” prepaid travel card. The “Travel Money Card Plus” is currently available in Euros, U.S. dollars and Sterling and allows customers to lock in the competitive exchange rate offered on the day of purchase. The cards are available at more than 3,000 Post Office branches across the UK and will be processed centrally by FIS. The FIS Card Processing Services supports debit, credit and prepaid programs providing the necessary messaging and integration with payments industry schemes.

First Data electronic commerce and payment processing has issued a new brand name for its “Bank of Scotland Merchant Services” acquiring, now functioning under “First Data Merchant Solutions.” This is the first step in a longer-term plan to deliver enhanced value and solutions to First Data’s merchant customer base in the UK, marking the company’s first acquiring venture in the UK, and one of just a few around the world to operate under First Data’s own name without the attachment of a banking partner brand. Leading Economic Index (LEI) Declines

The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for Japan decreased 2.1% in April while the Coincident Economic Index decreased 0.3% in April. The Conference Board LEI for Japan fell sharply in April, following a decline in March. The weaknesses among the leading indicators continued to be widespread – the six-month growth rate of productivity, index of overtime worked, (inverted) business failures, stock prices, and new orders for machinery and construction all contributed negatively to this month. With the decrease in April, the six-month change in the leading economic index turned negative again – to -0.7 percent (a -1.5 percent annual rate) between October 2010 and April 2011, after positive readings for the previous three months. Nevertheless, the strengths among the leading indicators were more widespread than the weaknesses over the six months through April. With the decrease of 2.1 percent in April, The Conference Board LEI for Japan now stands at 94.4 (2004=100).

U.S. BANK ISSUES DUAL EMV CHIP AND CONTACTLESS PAYMENT

U.S. Bank has partnered with Visa and Oberthur Technologies to introduce its “FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa” dual interface payment solution with enhanced acceptance and credit cards system compatibility. Manufactured and personalized by Oberthur Technologies, the credit card combines Visa payWave, EMV chip, and magnetic stripe technologies, giving US customers the first card that can be used anywhere on a chip-card reader, with a merchant overseas, a contactless payment terminal or with just a traditional magstripe reader. In facilitating this, a computer chip is embedded in the card, allowing the customer to simply ‘wave and go’ when making a purchase. The “FlexPerks Travel Rewards Visa” will be introduced to more than 20,000 U.S.Bank FlexPerks Visa cardholders, followed by travel reward cardholders, before 2012.
