Ceridian Wins Patent Case

Ceridian Stored Value Solutions (SVS) won its patent case against Card Activation Technologies, indicating 33 of the 36 claims of Card Activation Technologies, Inc.’s U.S. Patent No. 6,032,859 are invalid. Card Activation Technologies stipulated the remaining three claims are also invalid. SVS filed this lawsuit seeking to invalidate all of the claims of U.S. Patent No. 6,032,859 because Card Activation Technologies, Inc. had previously sued a number of SVS’s customers asserting that SVS’s card products infringed the patent.

Serverside card customisation patent Endorsed by EU

Serverside Group, having been subject to a challenge in opposition proceedings, has been maintained without amendments to the claims in an oral hearing by the European Patent Office. A written decision is expected imminently. McDonald’s of Canada and MasterCard Canada launched MasterCard “PayPass” contactless payment technology at participating McDonald’s restaurant locations. With this, PayPass POS payment terminals have been installed at more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants across the country, giving patrons the option to simply tap-and-go to make their purchases. Consumers with a PayPass-enabled MasterCard credit card or mobile phone can quickly and securely pay for their purchases with a simple tap of their card or phone on a PayPass point-of-sale payment terminal.

JUNE CONSUMER BANKRUPTCY UP 4% M/M, 1H/11 FILINGS DOWN 6%

June 2011 filings interrupted the downward trend in consumer bankruptcies, having jumped 4% from the May 2011 consumer bankruptcy total of 114,803 filings to 119,768, 5% greater than the year ago figure of 126,270 filings. Chapter 13 filings, meanwhile, also surged slightly 1% from the May figure to 28% in June. However, for the entire first half of the year, U.S. consumer bankruptcy filings painted a different picture, dropping 8% from the year ago figure to 709,303 since January 2011, according to the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), relying on data from the National Bankruptcy Research Center (NBKRC). The ABI is the largest multi-disciplinary, nonpartisan organization dedicated to research and education on matters related to insolvency.
