Global Payment Card GDV (Gross Dollar Volume) for Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards (credit + debit) globally increased 5.8% year-on-year (YOY) on a nominal dollars basis, for the fourth quarter (4Q/18), compared to 6.2% YOY in the prior quarter. However, on a currency adjusted basis (FX) global GDV for 4Q/18 increased an estimated 10.4% YOY, compared to 10.3% for 3Q/18, according to analysis by RAM Research.
The major four networks posted $4834 billion in global GDV for 4Q/18, compared to $4647 billion in the prior quarter and $4569 billion for the year ago quarter, according to figures collected by CardData.
Visa Global GDV
Visa reported a 4.0% YOY gain in global GDV on a nominal basis, however, on an FX basis Visa was up 8.4%. Visa reported $2926 billion in 4Q/18 GDV, compared to a revised $2835 billion in the prior quarter and a revised $2813 billion for the year ago quarter, reports CardData.
Among Visa’s six regions, GDV, on a FX basis, was up 7.1% in Asia-Pacific and up 9.2% in the Latin America Caribbean (LAC) regions. Central Europe Middle East Africa (CEMEA) increased 8.4%, the U.S. grew 9.6% while Canada was up 8.3% YOY and Europe up 7.4%.
Mastercard Global GDV
Mastercard reported an 9.3% increase YOY in global GDV on a nominal basis, however, on an FX basis Mastercard was up 14.3%. MasterCard reported $1550 billion in 4Q/18 GDV, compared to a revised $1469 billion in the prior quarter and $1416 billion for the year ago quarter.
Among Mastercard’s five regions, GDV, on a FX basis, was up 11.7% in Canada, Europe up 19.9%, Latin America 16.8%, Asia Pacific Middle East Africa (APMEA) 13.1% and the U.S. at 10.2%.
American Express Global GDV
American Express reported an 6.0% YOY gain in global GDV on a nominal basis, however, on an FX basis American Express was 8.0% YOY. American Express reported $309.0 billion in 4Q/18, compared to $294.7 billion in the prior quarter and $291.4 billion for the year ago quarter.
Among American Express’ four regions, GDV, on an FX basis, was up 5% in the Japan Asia Pacific Australia (JAPA) region followed by Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA), up 8%. Latin America Canada (LACC) posted an 11% increase. The U.S region rose 9% YOY.
Discover/Diners Global GDV
Diners Club International GDV increased 3.6% YOY for the fourth quarter to $8.7 billion, from $8.4 billion in the prior quarter and $8.4 billion for the year ago quarter.
